Forestry/Environmental News:

Drinking Water Action Plan – New groundwater protection regulations plus amendments to the regulations governing installation and maintenance of wastewater systems will be coming forward as another step towards protecting drinking water from source to tap under the government’s Drinking Water Action Plan.

According to a Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection news release (dated July 7, 2004):

Over the next 15 months, new groundwater protection regulations, requested and developed in partnership with industry, will be phased in that will improve the safety and quality of British Columbia’s groundwater supplies.

Matters addressed include:

  • groundwater contamination by wells that are not properly constructed;
  • flood-proofing of wells so run-off contamination cannot occur during flooding or heavy rains;
  • well identification plates on all community wells;
  • establishing standards to ensure wells are properly drilled, sealed, maintained and closed;
  • qualification requirements for well drillers and well pump installers who will be on a newly created provincial registry.

Private Land Removed From Tree Farm Licences – The Forests Minister has approved the removal of some private land from tree farm licences currently held by the following companies: Weyerhaeuser, TimberWest, Rice Properties, Alcan and Western Forest Products.
