Explanatory Note

This bill will amend the Vancouver Charter to allow for increased density as compensation for the creation of social housing.

VANCOUVER SOCIAL HOUSING AMENDMENT ACT, 2007

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

1 Section 2 of the Vancouver Charter, S.B.C. 1953 c. 55 is amended by adding the following definition:

"social housing" means housing whereby the provincial government provides some type of subsidy or rent assistance.

2 Section 565.1(2) of the Vancouver Charter, S.B.C. 1953 c. 55 is amended by adding the following text:

(2) The following are conditions that may be included under subsection (1) (b):

(b) conditions relating to the provision of affordable, social, and special needs housing, as such housing is defined in the by-law, including the number, kind and extent of the housing;

3 Section 565.1(3) of the Vancouver Charter, S.B.C. 1953 c. 55 is amended by adding the following text:

(3) A zoning by-law under section 565 (1) (f) may designate an area within a zone for affordable, social, or special needs housing, as such housing is defined in the by-law, if the owners of the property covered by the designation consent to the designation.
